In some of these old Japanese movies, it's kind of obvious they were in a hurry, or way over budget. In others, it looks like they had all the time in the world, and made good use of it. I have no idea what was going on, but in
Zatoichi the Fugitive (1963) cinematographer Chishi Makiura earned his pay. Here are a few shots from the film:
