It cut across some partisan and ethnic lines, and reflected the deeply pessimistic mood of a state that once defined optimism and almost unlimited potential for the rest of the nation. Even union members, the backbone of the Democratic Party organization here and elsewhere, abandoned Davis in large numbers."
