Historical, Crafted, Spiritual, Athletic, Lethal, Under $200

An interesting show on the English Longbow lead me to an English traditional archery shop (the same featured on the History Channel) where yew wood unrecurved longbows are under $500, and DIY kits are available for less than $200. A quick check lead to a fair list of in-city, outdoor archery ranges. I may have to investigate further.

Hmmm...and there's an outdoor range in Golden Gate Park...

Speaking of which, there's a drive for a local ballot measure to completely outlaw handguns in San Francisco.

gah.

Registration would be fine with me. But outlawing them?

What is this Berkeley?

BTW: when I was at the Museum of London, they had a display where you could pull a (stationary) longbow string. I could do it -- once. Doing it repeatedly would be a real upper-body workout!

This is what I'm thinking - great for the back, easy on the knees, one box of recylable ammunition, and very useful if you are trying to subjugate Northern France with 7500 friends on St. Crispin's day.

I was idly thinking of taking a western sword fighting class just for a geeky drive for a good workout (there is a nationally reknowned stage fight teacher in Seattle), but this is much less goofy and far more practical. Also, a really great situation for you kilt-wearers, I would think.

I saw a thing an the "thing" channel about how archiologists were able to identify the skeletal bones of longbowmen because their profession made the bones in the forearms bigger than normal.
