The Restless Conservatives
On the right, there is increasingly a sense of discontent - an ugly feeling that they've been had. A few samples:
- George Will has several intelligent things to say, none offering aid or comfort to the current administration.
- William Kristol is wondering aloud what's wrong with Bush's leadership.
- Joe Scarborough is mad as hell.
- Even Trent Lott says, ominously, that "mistakes are being made."
For Democrats, it's just another example of the administration's hubris coming home to roost. But for Republicans, it's the moment when you can't even pretend anymore.

I'm sorry, but I've spoken to some of the rank-and-file GOP. This might come as a shock: they generally view FEMA's response as a vindication of their anti-federalist views.
I darkly suspect that Republicans who actually have to stand for election are merely adopting righteous poses.
Okay, Scarborough and Will aren't running for anything. But they play to much the same crowd.
The initial public reaction, on all sides, will deepen immeasurably in the next few weeks.
They've shipped 25,000 body bags.
