yeah, it doesn't really fit the text. The Bible is full of contradictions, but the sayings of Jesus, esp. on certain points, not so much.
This is particularly true in matters of wealth and altruism. I once heard a nun tell a group of slight stunned religious officials, "there is no ambiguity - we are on the side of the poor."
