Not much time left
The Tempest has one more week to run in Orinda.
It's a good production, though there were things I didn't care for (like leaving Gonzalo on the cutting room floor). But it's the freaking Tempest, no point getting picky.
Erika Chong Shuch as Ariel is so perfect I cannot imagine ever seeing better. At one point Prospero instructs Ariel to bring forth a wind...Ariel gestures, and the wind starts blowing into Bruns amphitheatre. Must have been tough to rehearse.
Next year they're doing Pericles Prince of Tyre (link). Can they pull it off? This group is very smart and they can act - I'll be there to find out.

How do you beat the Tempest? You do not.
You've obviously never seen "Hell comes to Frogtown".
Cal Shakes is an interesting outfit. They take big risks, which is not unusual. But they generally get away it, which is.
Their audience knows the plays very well, and they have lectures before some performances where they have to answer for their transgressions. Fun to listen to those.
I love the lecture before performance format. Our conductor does this for our choir recitals-very informative and makes the performance way more meaningful.
