This hullaballo over markets and indifference to dictators offers me a flimsy excuse to mention this: I was in a high dudgeon over a Chase card charge today (dealing with the fascinating concept of interest on a zero balance) and noted, in a most gentlemanly fashion, that book on the history of Chase Manhattan in the lobby, in a chapter on its history in WWII, neglected to mention the seizure of Jews' accounts in France in 1940.
The clerk's reply was "was that in response to government requirements?"
