I recommend core observational drawing skills to everyone. Talent is indeed about 3% of it.. cultivated fascination is vastly more important.
If you've never tried it seriously, give me two hours and I will show you how to a draw a tree in such a way that it will change the way that you see everything.
Cambridge Center for Adult Education used to have an open studio where you could go draw a nude model on Saturday afternoons. I had a really attractive artist girlfriend at the time and we would go draw together. She did change the way I saw a number of things....
