Go Ahead, Install It, You Know You Want To...

IBM advises employees not to install the new Microsoft service pack (also known as "where compatibility goes to die").

Damn straight. I spend about 1/4 of my work time installing Microsoft service packs and then, fixing the things they break. Having to reload an entire machine due to a service pack fizzle is not uncommon. Unfortunatly, NOAA is under constant pressure from higher-ups in the Department of Commerce to install anything with the vaunted "S" word in it ("Security"). I have not been "ordered" to load SP2 yet and I am planning not to until they threaten me at gunpoint.

One More thing, Microsoft will be adding SP2 to their automatic updates site beginning 8/16. If you have your XP computer set to accept automatic updates, then you will get it whether you want it or not. Microsoft has provided "opt out" directions on their site and I will try to find the link.

Please do post it. I have had similar experiences at my (former) job, where we didn't have a choice to install them because our customers do. Freakin' Microsoft!
