Random Thought
Even in the computer business, I know very few highly successful people who care very much about or use computers. The really successful people I know are negotiators, thinkers, networkers...they have the hired help install, maintain, and operate the computers.

If by 'successful' you mean 'rich', the richest folks I know are all basically dot com lottery winners.
If by 'successful' you mean 'achieve maximum enjoyment from their vocations' or alternatively 'basically slack off most of the day with occational bursts to genius to bring home the bacon', then sorry, but programmers have that wrapped up.
If by 'successful' you mean 'posess unique personality disorders that force them to climb ever higher while never quite achieving lasting happiness." then I'd have to agree with you.
