Good-Bye, Whomever You Were
Dr. X posts this thinking of small dark room in Alaska with a reel-to-reel tape recorder, where he first heard The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
"Good-bye, Syd Barrett. The man needs two obituaries, one for his body and one for his sanity. The latter could have been written a long time ago."

Also in today's rock great obits:
CBGBs closes, complete with a daft plan to move it to Vegas, which of course if far, far worse than simply having it close down.
I would say this: the real freedom in life exists in small, fragile pools and eddies where liberty and experimentation and capability and high expectations is, by way mostly of indifference, allowed to coexist without interference. CBGBs, by all accounts, was a crappy bar that left a lot of casualties, but it nurtured a whip-smart self-aware pop music that resonates everywhere today, the benchmark music that lets us know how truly appalling bad so much Pop is today.
This lame bar was a cultural broadcaster, over-idolized now for almost 30 years, but still, whatever replaces it will do almost nothing for society, unlike the Ramones and the Talking Heads and even Blondie.
Capital crushes this. Government crushes this. Society crushes this. Here's to all the Temporary Autonomous Zones, in bars and studios and schools and fields and in heads like Barretts, and all their inevitable obituaries.
