Can Someone Explain This?

Dr. X posts this from the Carter Center for Clueless Indulgence of Authoritarian Enemies of Our Great Nation:

"Pelosi to Syria. Anyone? Anyone?

"Her website is silent. I don't understand why, as Democrats score on the GOP again and again, that she would offer this target to let them get back in the game.

"I have been brainstorming about what might be the real reason for the trip. My best guesses so far:

"a) She is an android designed by the CIA to explode when she shakes hands with Assad.

"b) She has discovered fresh evidence on what happened to Kanaan and is rushing to help Syrian intelligence clear up this mystery.

"c) She seriously thinks she will accomplish something.

"It's that last one that concerns me."

I disagree on this one. As bad as Syria is, the situation is not, I think, directly comparable to Iran when Carter was indeed indulging an authoritarian regime that set up the current trouble, after, of course, our fucking over the nascnet Iranian democracy in the early 50s. The distinction is that the Shah was OUR turd blossom.

Assad is Syria's own home-turd (as well as a former London dentist.) The distinction is critical, because it means that internal political movement in Syria will not be very susceptible to outside pressure. Other examples with moustaches or unusual haircuts come to mind.

In the middle of the worldwide US diplomatic catastrophy, movement must happen. Pelosi's move will I suspect force US State Department action within the Administration, and may have been designed to do so, to pressure Bush to get his ass in gear on Palestine and Israel, a former side-show in the Middle East turned front and center by our incredible nod-nod wink-wink to Israel's invasion of Lebanon, which I'm guessing - really guessing - did more damage to moderation and democracy in Lebanon that the assasination, almost undoubtedly by Syria, did.

The old talk, or the young die.
