Spot the Distraction

Dr. X posts this from an Internet Cafe on Shattuck:

"The crack journalists at Yahoo! have identified a significant distraction in classes around the nation - see if you can spot it:

Let us suggest laptops are not always the primary distraction. (I recall a fellow grad student, at the, er, height of low-riser hiphuggers, motivated by the natural sitting position of thusly clad students at a drawing horse to place quarters in highly inappropriate places, at least in theory.)

But this it gives me an opening to discuss my favorite classroom rule: if your phone rings, you bring cookies for everyone next class. You can even answer the phone, but if you do, you have to bring pizza for everyone.

It turns an significant annoyance into positive cookie production.

Laptops are not really an issue in the art studio, except for mine, right now.

The cookie rule is so successful as a behavior modification system that I always recommend it widely. No one is humiliated, and everyone gets cookies. (Tonight, in fact, do to a slight misunderstanding, there is a large pile of Ritz crackers on my desk.) We have actually gotten to the point in classes where people regret that no one's phone has gone off.

For laptops, I would suggest that they are tolerable until the moment it bleeps, bings, buzzes, or whirs at a phone-ring level, at which point the cookie rule would go into effect.

In answer to "spot the distraction" I was going to say "The dishwater blond on the end." but FSL's answer is better.
