Sci. American: Pshaw on Talent
Fascinating article from 2006 on the nature of what we call talent.
Surprise! It's mostly training, even and especially to an expert level. A related article, which fits my experience as an instructor, suggests that the idea of talent is a significant hindrance to students, supporting the idea that they cannot accomplish a task.
One interesting detail in the former was that for most expertise, it takes ten years of engaged training to reach a level of expertise, with the exception of traditional tracking in hunting, which took around 20 years.
