While flying P-40s in India and China during the war, my father's air base was guarded by Ghurkas. One night he was assigned to stand alert, which means he had to go out and sit in his plane all night awaiting an alert.

He went out to his plane and began fumbleing with his equipment under the wing. As he bent over to rummage through his kit, he felt cold, hard steel nestle up behind his left ear. "Good evening Sahib." Came the voice behind him.

Father turned around to find a well armed Ghurka who had been guarding the planes. He knew my father but felt it was good practice for both of them if the Ghurka did some sneakin.

Oh yes, the cold metal was the Ghurka's gun barrel. Dad, had the utmost respect for the Ghurkas and had a great time in his old age when we went to a restaurant in London run by former Ghurkas. The food was excellent and serverd by ultra stealthy waiters.; May 12, 2009 at 4:04 PM
