Just thinking...

Is there any other president in my lifetime who could have pulled this off?

Nicely calculated - a slow news day at the end of July, all three networks zoomed-in on the President, the Vice President, and their two Irish buddies, mending fences over a round out in the sunshine.

Nice day to be an American.

You're kidding, right? It was an embarrassment that it happened at all. Obama butted his bloated nanny-state head into a local police situation by responding the way he did. Then he tries to smooth it over by having a detente/summit on the White House grounds in a Kumbayah moment for the cameras? Good grief. Did he send the aggrieved parties home with an iPod full of his most epic teleprompter-led speeches?

Let's hope that Obama never has any serious diplomatic fences to mend. If he does, we're all screwed.

I thought it was a well-staged photo op.

As for fence mending, I think there is a pretty good track record so far.

That's not a reflection on fence-mending. That's just other countries applauding his efforts at bad-mouthing America to the world. It's not exactly something I would be proud of if I were you.

So the reason other countries like us more is because he is saying bad things about us to them?

Not really following you there.

Let me ask you this - do you think having lots of countries intensely dislike us is good for national security?

Yes. That's exactly what I'm saying. They've despised Bush (for good reason -- he was a boob) and have been delighted with Obama's apology tours.

"Let me ask you this - do you think having lots of countries intensely dislike us is good for national security?"

It depends. Generally, no. However, sometimes it's better to be feared than to be loved (h/t to Machiavelli). It really depends on the country. Libya feared we'd invade them -- as we did with Iraq -- and they gave up their nuclear program voluntarily. The same strategy didn't work with Iran, though.

I'm sure Obama will just have a beer summit with them, though, and world peace will permeate across the world.
