No one deserves a violent end, and his death is regrettable. I have sympathy for his family.
But I am not jumping on the "great Alaskan" bandwagon with Ted Stevens.
He was the handmaiden of some of the most despicable companies on the earth. And corruption in high office is among the highest and most destructive of crimes.
May he rest in peace. But much of his legacy is corruption, greed, national divisiveness, viciousness in politics, and the criminally wasted potential of Alaska.
Stevens's wipeout touched a numb place where I'm supposed to have a human response. The list of prominent Alaskans who have checked out this way - including the father of his successor in the Senate - is so long that I truly have trouble mustering a normal human response.
Maybe flying in Alaska isn't very safe, you know?
