QHTP #5

Fremont High School, Sunnyvale (not Fremont)

Wikipedia: "The school site was once used as a military base. There is a stretch of open space on the campus that runs from the front entrance gates to the rear parking lot (parallel to Fremont Ave). That area was used as a short runway. There are also a couple of WWII-era Quonset huts located near the tennis courts."

I find a great appeal in the spare elegance of Quonset huts that I rarely found in the brutalist/modernist architectual movement. The dominant curve, the lightness of material have a spartan grace. The CURVE, people.

I am beginning to notice a growing movement of architectural structures based on new construction fabrics stretched over light metal frames - sail or tent like, they make curves easy and inexpensive and light, much like the light frame and metal of the Quonset Hut. It's hard to think of a more beautiful line for a roof than a contemporary, almost vaulted-arched camp tent rendered house-sized and in frames and light composites. Very promising indeed.

It's about a mile south of El Camino Real...

I find quonset huts with windows and skylights to be most appealing.

So much for that confident local historian who was sure there were no Quonset Huts except on that road.
