Yesterday I listened to Sound Opinions on public radio yesterday (www.soundopinions.org). Most of the show was an interview with Butch Vig, who produced Nevermind and a number of other groundbreaking "alternative" albums in the '90s. His latest production is the new Foo Fighters album Wasting Light.
After the 45-minute interview, they delivered their review of Wasting Light. It was brutal.
Was Butch Vig’s hard work worth it on the Foo Fighters new record Wasted Light? Yes and no, say Jim and Greg. The album is excellently produced, trimmed of all fat, and will sound great on the radio. But no amount of production can make Dave Grohl’s lyrics any better. The songs on Wasted Light are formulaic and cliché. Jim and Greg don’t deny Grohl is a tremendous drummer, and they recommend his other post-Nirvana projects like Probat and Them Crooked Vultures. But when it comes to songwriting…it’s a Trash It.

Oh come on. "Life's a Bitch...But Keep on Truckin'" changed my life.
He has some really good songs, no doubt.
