Spherical Earth Remains But A Theory

"Rick Perry, a vocal spherical earth skeptic, described the FCO's spending on the project as "misdirected". His spokeswoman told the Guardian: "In Texas, we base our policy decisions on sound science and what is ultimately best for our citizens. A spherical earth remains but a theory and one where thousands of scientists remain skeptical. It would be irresponsible to put our entire economy at risk based on unproven science. "

Oh sorry, I mistyped something there.

Well, I'm finally clear on this part.

Originally, I thought they really believed that. But of course no one who studies these people with any attention believes they're stupid.

Then I figured it was a simple purity test. To be in our group you have to say Blue is Green. This willingness to publicly repeat obviously untrue talking points affirms your loyalty.

But then I realized it's even simpler than that. The GOP depends on people consistently voting against their own interests. The only way to get them to do that is to tell them stories that will distract them. Science becomes a conspiracy, ideology becomes the only secure refuge, and the more Kool-Aid they drink the dumber they get, and the better that story sells, until they're Kansas. Or Germany.
