We get back to Gould's discussion of non-overlapping magisteria pretty quickly. Arguably the point of a ghost is that it is concerned with other realms, other areas of concern than the concrete and practical.
In the story linked above, the man has taken care of the ghost, but arguably not the guilt. And I'm not sure it's easier to deal with the guilt with or without the ghost.
I think not knowing the object of his affection was already dead would diminish her credentials as a psychic. I'm always surprised when psychics are arrested, because they really should know when the police are coming around...

Credentialing spooks is serious business. I am spending a lot of time today ruminating on whether this is a fair question.
