Grant opines
Before we tear down all the monuments, this quote from Grant came to mind:
I felt like anything rather than rejoicing at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly, and had suffered so much for a cause, though that cause was, I believe, one of the worst for which a people ever fought, and one for which there was the least excuse. And this one:
The present difficulty, in bringing all parts of the United States to a happy unity and love of country grows out of the prejudice to color. The prejudice is a senseless one, but it exists.

That first quote I rely on heavily. He rather earned the right to those comments.
But the emphasis is on the close. The Confederacy merits no publicly sanctioned glorification, only tragic acknowledgement.
Grant is my favorite. If you haven't read his memoirs, I highly recommend doing so!
