Very possibly- but far from certainly. In '68, the riots were at the Democratic Convention, and the effect went against Humphrey in the general. It would depend a great deal on the reaction to the riots; fairly mild, Seattle-like disorder, matched with a draconian response, it could easily damage the president more.

Trust the 'pubs the milk anything that happens, and rely on the press to slavishly amplify it.

The problem is that there is a distributed (almost Al-Qaeda like...but no) network of GOP sleaze purveyors who, I think, are pursing a strategy of leveraging their resources by producing the kind of attacks that make news. Aroused, the Kerry camp wastes several times as much money in response.

The Swifties are just the most prominent example; I'm sure I could think more up if I weren't so sleepy and thunder didn't keep rocking the house.

I'm guessing riots. Hot weather, easy public transportation to the city, the usual New York disrespect for authority, and literally millions of angry, angry people available. Not the draft riots of 1863 all over again, but it'll get ugly.
