Dr. X's Secret

"I think we are genetically programmed to be fearful of BMW drivers in the same way that we are programmed to be just a little bit frightened of Scottish people in pub lavatories."

In addition to narrating the "456 goes boom" clip from ferrariclub.com (go back and see it if necessary), Jeremy Clarkson writes pithily on things automotive for The Times of London.

I understand completly. Along with my strange fear of BMW's I also have odd, irrational fears of small childern playing with handguns and drunk bears in shopping malls.

Perhaps BMW danger doesn't extend across the pond?

As a former BMW motorcycle owner, I learned to stay far away from rental trucks, SUVs, pickups, and any large, over-insulated quasi sports car (this made a Lexus rather dangerous), in approximately that order. The SUVs are incredibly dangerous for motorcyclists in that, although they can see far down the road, they are clueless about their immediate environment and unable to manouver swiftly, and as general rule are indifferent to human life. (In this respect they are superior to pickups, which are actively hostile to human life.) With sports cars, they are at least trying to impress people, which doesn't work if you kill them.

As a final note, I have been struck more than once by the contrast between the not-infrequently deluded BMW driver (present X excepted), and the sedate, sober, virtually intellectual BMW motorcyclist. Such as myself.

That is, of course, excluding the SS, who I was informed by a friend who was in the Norwegian resistance, rode BMW bikes. (I learned this after mentioning to him that I just bought mine - a feeling which I can only compare to realizing you just brought 1000 Year Reich Brand Pancake Mix to the Interfaith breakfast panel.)
