Only one hitch: he couldn't produce a legitimate heir; or, more appropriately, his wife, Catherine of Braganza could not, as he had 16 children by his mistresses. He was succeeded by his brother James, Duke of York (for whom New York is named), who was cast from the throne after only four years to be replaced by William (a Dutchman) and Mary (his daughter).
