Worse Than You Thought

How bad was it? Consider Football Outsiders' view of the Rams:

"The Rams may be the worst team to ever make the playoffs (read about other bad teams here). Not only are they 8-8, but eight wins is actually more than a team of their caliber would usually have. The pythagorean projection (explanation) says their points scored and allowed would normally lead to only 6.1 wins, or a .380 winning percentage. Only two other teams have made the playoffs with a pythagorean projection of lower than .400: the 1978 Atlanta Falcons (9-7, outscored 290-240) and the 1989 Pittsburgh Steelers (9-7, outscored 326-265)."

I chalk it up to karma. Shaun Alexander put personal goals ahead of the team on January 3rd. And now the Seahawks can go home and take a nap.

Trifle not with the football gods!

What's odd is that Alexander's comments seem completly out of character. He stands out for his humility and good nature, a true sportsman. In fact, as the game against the Falcons was winding down, there was conjecture about how he might be mad about not being given the opportunity to win the rushing title,. Instead, at the end of the game, there he was congradulating the other players with no sign of anger.

I have to chalk his comments up to spur of the moment frustration. He has apologized. Holmgren has accepted that it was an off the cuff remark.

What I can't figure out is why Alexander has been left unsigned. I fear that Holmgren my be planning to take a few Seahawk free agents with him to San Francisco. Holmgren and Alexander both say they want to stay in Seattle. We'll see.
