I remember an interview with Stewart when he was asked about the Daily Show's ideology.
A great answer:
"I think we are just passionately opposed to bullshit."
Recently he had on an academic who wrote the essay "On Bullshit," which had an excellent point: true bullshitting in power is far worse than lying, because the liar at least had a cognizance and a kind of backwards respect for the truth. The bullshitter is indifferent; he has no interest in anything other than winning.
It's the last point, a pathological fear of not being a "winner," that seems to drive a lot of conservatives. The truth gets kicked to the curb without a second thought.
