The difference between "looting" and "finding"...

...and the difference between

And
White.

I noted that even in this total catastrophy, FOX News and Carlson were stressing looting, re- running the same tape of people running out of stores with stuff, as if it were the major problem and gas prices were going to be the primary impact- no matter that perhaps a million are homeless, hundreds and thousands trapped and drowning still, and over the next weeks, there is a real risk of catastrophic infectious disease. There is a potential risk, today, to thousands and thousands more lives.

I suppose that racism in the South is not a total surprise, but never estimate the cult of property.

But it's getting worse now, guns are on the street and people are desparate. I wrote here (and deleted) just before the disaster a fear that the whole thing was being far underestimated -and, when wondering how Bush would screw it up, suspected that saving refineries might take resource precedence over saving lives.

The balance of policy will come into play now. Will the administration truly make it a priority to handle the obvious epidemic threat, and house and feed and arrange temporary work for over a million people for 6 months or more? America is waiting for leadership, and Bush's anemic warning beforehand was not promising.

The biggest unaddressed part of this crisis is basic public health care. And now you have a million suddenly homeless, often uninsured people, with immediate needs, and Lousiana's entire economy, heavily dependent on cargo and oil, is at least temporarily moribund.
