Patrick O'Brien called it something like "the heady freedom of battle." It has all the winning characteristics of mental and physical trial, risk, thrill, and brotherhood under fire.
But modern war is, afterall, all about inserting metal at high-velocity into human bodies, and manipulating the fear of this gruesome reality for political purposes.
Safe in the cocoon of the unthreatened, I try to make up for enjoying WWII movies by thinking of war when I stub my toe.
Heavy drinking can do the same thing. For a lot less cost to the taxpayers.
I've heard the same things said about racing fast vehicles, art college and strip clubs.
None of which involve any tax-payer expense.
Well okay, there tend to be a lot of single moms at strip clubs, and that may involve taxpayers, but I digress.
