48% of America: there is no excuse for this. "God guided the process," the perfect reasonable compromise, compatible with all kinds of Christian theologies - MOST OF IT, in fact. Tolerant. Somewhat thoughtful. Passably cognizant.

Yet your commitment to self-blinding, willful ignorance is stronger. At least, in the aggregate, it isn't getting worse.

Hey, ignorance is power -- if you're a religious leader. I'm just happy they are drawing the line at convincing people that the sun revolves around the earth, like they used to.

It's funny, lately I've been in a charitable mood, thinking "Religion's an OK thing. If it gives folks comfort, then more power to 'em."

Then someone reminds me "Hey. These idiots often want to limit other people's access to knowledge, medicine, drugs, pre and post marital sex, abortion, free speech, hot man/man or girl/girl porn and heliocentric views of the cosmos."

Sigh.

When I was younger I dreamed someone would invent a drug that would put people into a mental state where they could be converted to any religion.

I dreamed that this would signal the end of religion, when folks realized that faith was just another mental state and there was nothing mystical about it.

Now that I'm older, this is more of a nightmare.

I've realized that those who hold sway over their followers would just use it to convert everyone, regardless of the moral, ethical or even religious considerations.

So having swung towards a-theism (belief there is no supreme deity), I'm now starting to swing back to my original anti-theism (active dislike of religion) roots.

Just today in the local campus center there was a Students for Christ booth.

My first thought was a competing booth, with the following, albeit a bit self-defeating slogan:

Students For Atheism. We don't have a prayer.
