Now is the time to buy a nice watch

Really, the pricing is more attractive during a global depression. Ashford has some interesting items on sale, but this Hamilton everyday caught my eye - looks like a better value even than my old Broadarrow PRS-10.

If you ever felt a trace of guilt over an interest in horology, you may now set it aside. The Dalai Lama is a big fan. He is believed, and this is no joke, to be the only the only non-specialist known to be able to repair his own Patek Philippe watch. Details here.

UPDATE: This review from Amazon gives a hint as to why this item is not flying off the shelves:

"Thanks to another reviewer I was not surprised by the unpleasant smell of the leather band. I still don't understand it, but out of the box the smell is imperceptible. However, as you wear the watch you begin to notice the odor and it gets to the point where the smell becomes overpowering. This watch band has the power of two brand new pairs of leather shoes and a leather jacket. A month later the smell is almost gone, but I thought I wasn't going to make it..."

Better more than anything would be having one of the watches he smashed while learning. Then, when people asked you what time it was, you could "I don't know. The Dalai Lama smashed my watch. "

You are enlightened. There is nothing more to teach, nothing more to learn.

Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

I read a book about the Dalai Lama where the author said he asked the Lama about that bit. And the Lama had heard about it and thought it was funny...even gave him a little "gunga-galunga".

If you're shopping for a religion...how can you not sign up for that?

Bill Murray swears the Dalai Lama muttered that to him at the end of a conversation they had.
