I think because of Youtube and the Internets, there is now this whole genre of popular music acts doing live, acoustic versions of their songs. The original suckage or non-suckage of the work notwithstanding, these people appear able to sing their songs, and sometimes even play instruments without help. For a child educated by the Monkees and Milli Vanilli, this does represent a kind of progress.
My 8,000 word essay on Pharrell is progressing nicely, but in the meantime here are some examples:
- Adele drops by the NPR offices to bring her paint-peeling power shriek to a more intimate setting.
- Bastille has at least four "offhand" acoustic Youtube versions of their worldwide smash hit Pompeii: this one is in France.
- One Republic does an acoustic version of Counting Starshere that is well-regarded by some in our home, although the hat really cannot be excused.
I'm not saying it's awesome, but some of these new songs the kids listen today are...listenable. A step forward for civilization, I say.

I vote "sucks."

Hey, buddy, I was educated by the Monkees -- you got a problem with that?
