I heard this on the radio in Longmont, Colorado, yesterday. The DJ said these guys just hated each other, barely spoke for years, but being brothers and all decided to try to do something together again. After much arguing, they discovered there was only one artist they both agreed was worth covering: Big Bill Broonzy. Hence the album title, "Common Ground".
As well-aimed as your PHC comment is, I have decided not to get angry with people who choose to mellow out as they go along. I believe it was Big Bill Broonzy who said: "even children get older, I'm getting older too."
Or bland enough that the song, itself, is missing the context. Like if I heard it on the radio, I would think the guys doing it must be famous for something else.

Earnest response: "That's nice!"
Snarky response: "That's nice, are they appearing on Prairie Home Companion?"

I have no idea if any of this it true.

It's not so much that it's mellow, it's that it is just a bit precious.
