It has come to our attention that the Iraq insurgency is not, as we had said earlier, a few hooligans and malcontents out looking for trouble. It is, in fact, a large and well-organized rebellion against a foreign occupying power, led by those who were disenfranchised by the attack on their nation. We regret the error.

I said it before, I will say it again:
My favorite barrista last year, at the late, lamented Still Life in Fremont, had a far better appreciation of the consequences of going to war in Iraq than the entire US military-intelligence establishment. If memory serves, she pointed out that we would be kicking a bunch of people out of power who would probably resent this and would try to get back into power, taking advantage of the fact that the US would be perceived, duh, as an foreign occupying power.
