There exists - I'm told by another marine biologist - a computer program that exploits certain equations to create an image of almost any kind of shell. The laws that govern the structure of a nautilus, as above, are related to the fibonacci series (1,2,3,5,8..), and the golden ratio referred to in the Da Vinci Code (an adequate mystery grafted onto a fine art history speculation.) No news to artists, who have been exploiting this principle since ancient times.
The problem with the program is that the shell images are sort of right but kind of suck, because of their lack of specificity - they all tend to look alike, which is the difference between a logarithim and something a squid was trying to chew on.
