I have what's called a muller, used for grinding paint on flat glass, which was used for some of the earth colors in this painting (it's very large and sold the first night at the Henry Gallery), but the blue here is fairly ordinary ultramarine and phthalo. It's intensity comes the relative soft and dark values of the rest of the painting. This is very much an example of a limited pallete, which takes a small number of colors, predominantly earth tones, and builds a full range from careful attention to their interaction and context. Payne's grey can be made blue, a grayed down titanium white can turn into an intense light violet by surrounding it with ochres.

Nice. I like the reflective qualities in your paintings. You have a definites style that is your own.
