The upside of killer robots: Fewer soldiers killed

The downsides: Eventually folks will develop anti-killer robot technology ranging from sophisticated jammers to unsophisticated anti-robot holes in the ground.

It might save lives tactically, and let's hope it does. I can imagine particular situations where it might prove useful, such as quietly prepositioning a gun to cover a retreat corridor.

SoM's impressive counter-hole strategy suggests other problems. Because of what is likely to be fragile technology, even a well armed robot seems susceptible - to holes, bricks, pointed sticks, cinderblocks, a waterballoon filled with paint for the camera, any robot from Robot Wars, a $572 dollar Ford Festiva, boards with nails in them, not to mention an RPG-BB, by which I mean a role-playing gamer with a baseball bat.
