This reminds me that in 1985, I introduced a square-shaped sponge character called "Sam the Anthropomorphic Sponge from Outer Space," in the Reed College Quest, in my comic strip "One Dimensional Guy."
Sam was cheerful, googly-eyed, square (although facing flat, rather than standing up) and was once shot with a shotgun before reassembling, as sponges do. He appeared in 3 or 4 strips.
Fat lot of good that did me. I did have fun imagining a lawsuit - the time was long since past.
But it occurs to me what fun I could have by publishing a comic book with featuring Sam the Sponge. That I OWN the Sam could not be in dispute. And the how the porifera would fly.
