Anyone Tried This?

Board games, I notice belatedly, are having a bit of a renaissance. Has anyone tried the new Master and Commander tabletop game? It's predecessor, Dread Pirate, won an award for best family game, and my two year-old is getting bored with Stalingrad.

These look fine, and the return of the board game is impressive- ask the Viceroy, the board game collecting master. But all board games PALE BEFORE THE MIGHT OF ..... LOOPIN' LOUIE; designed for, if memory serves, FOUR and up, Loopin' louie is truly amazing experience, especially while drinking. YET, unlike Diplomacy, Risk, Aces of Aces, Checkers, or Rock Paper Scissors, YOUR TWO YEAR OLD, OR EVEN THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, MAY BE ABLE TO DEFEAT YOU. Hours of instant fun!

How does one describe it? There is a little guy in a plane suspended on a kind of crane that bounces and swings around the game board. You have three little chicken markers. If you don't hit the plane with your lever correctly, or if another player aims well, your chickens are knocked out.

Lame, Huh? NO, IT'S FREAKING AWESOME. IT IS A MIGHTY MIGHTY SOURCE OF CHEAP, SOCIABLE ENTERTAINMENT. IT'S BETTER THAN PICTIONARY. IT'S BETTER THAN AIR HOCKEY. LIKE ALL GREAT RELIGIONS, IT WILL HUMBLE AND ELEVATE YOU.

It's also out of print. It's been spotted on Ebay upwards of $100, but has also been nabbed at $28 by the sharper kilt wearers.

Yes...Loopin' Louie. One can never master Loopin Lous or even control the game. For the players, Loopin' Louis is a democracy at odds with itself. The fate of "the one" is in the hands of the other 3. All that can be hoped is that one whaps frantically, yet precisely.

As for other games, I have high hopes for an old Avalon Hill game I got for Christmas. It is called Pirates and is highlighted on Boardgamegeeks. The first sign that the game may be good is that the board is beautiful, a very colorful map of the Carribean. The game is about as complex as KingMaker and involves your manuevering your pirate over his life, from ship to ship, treasure to treasure, and on to eventual death or retirement. I haven't gotten to play it yet but soon, very soon.

I think of you Dr. X every time I open my boxed versions of Panzar Blitz and Panzar Leader and try to look for players.

If you are interested, eBay is a great marketplace for old Avalon Hill and SPI games. You can find almost every title ranging in price from an unopened, version of Richtofen's War I bought for 3.99, to well over $100 for a pristine copy of SPI's Lord of the Rings. Even if you are not buying, it is fun to paruse the titles and relive our old forray's to the Hobbie Shop in Spenard.
