Another Good Book
I was going to write a whole thing about Machiavelli here, but here's just one quote:
"No matter how powerful one's armies, in order to enter a country one needs the goodwill of the inhabitants."
Pinnacles of ignorance, indeed.
This is the best Machiavelli book.

The funny thing: Machiavelli, under all that cold-hearted ruthless analysis, was basically a progressive.
My favorite Machiavelli plan was in a city rife with brigands and knaves robbing and killing - the prince hires the most evil, vicious, freedom-hating new enforcer and skips town, where the new cop promptly imprisons, tortures and offs all the offenders. And a lot of others. The prince returns and is shocked- SHOCKED at the abuse of power, and promptly has the bad cop executed.
