This Isn't Funny

African witch-hunting is not a laughing matter -- it's murder.

Woman killed in witchcraft case

I wonder what Palin's position is on elderly women being rounded up by mobs, lynched, and burned beyond recognition?

Oh my god.

Suddenly I'm reminded that in the early 90's, a friend of mine from Wasilla, a ferocious and entertaining punk rock girl well known around Anchorage, was followed around by the state troopers who were apparently convinced that she was the maven of some witch cult, mostly because she was A) beautiful, B) unusual, and C) wore "satanic" clothes, meaning pretty much anything available at Hot Topic at the Diamond Mall in 1989.

Not to suggest of course, that she was free of illegal activities. I suspect that-unlike everyone else in Wasilla, he says with deepest sarcasm- she was using the drugs. But her specific point was that the Troopers were convinced by someone that she was the head of a demonic cult.

That was according to her, of course, but going over the memory, and considering this picture of a weird, demon-obsessed Pentecotal church, I believe her. And I understand how dangerous this thinking can get.
